I think it's not that it couldn't be done. Bitcoin is a good example for software keeping things consistent (no double spending) against strong and clever attackers. But, we can't do it once every X years, with little pressure to do it right and having to do it at lowest price

... Don't make decisions about Go's performance based on a release from mid-2017 (Go 1.9.2). Lots has gotten better since then but especially the garbage collector's handling of very large heaps.
Best way to make a #golang program faster: update to the latest version of Go! 2/2

And then there is the whole insanity of developing it for HPC. This immediately destroys all chances of leveraging production scale and HPC is much less critical for spying than the millions of servers that suffer from terrible firmware, BMCs and a legacy of being a PC arch

This sounds horrible to develop software for. Why the hell would you mix an ARM CPU with a RISC-V CPU that has all kinds of accelerated instructions when a beefier RISC-V with the same instructions can do the same without driving every developer insane?! twitter.com/wccftechdotcom…

I'm. sorry that happens to you. Also how interesting just someone's life be to be jealous about someone being excited over the work they do. Not even considering it's literally an exploding star

I think it's really not about SSH but about undocumented divergence between systems. SSH into a host to debug an issue is absolutely valid at any scale. SSH to a host to configure something to work is problematic. Of course there is also development machines

And IBM Z, for example we have completely separate address spaces for the kernel and the user processes and never did PCI without an IOMMU

actually one of the nicest esoteric design decisions in the language. know immediately at each usage site if the identifier is exported or not, and aesthetic consistency of pkgname.Identifier. dumping on this decision is a sure sign you're just grinding axes twitter.com/nick_r_cameron…

There's also support for using it for Btrfs compression inside the Kernel, I think it's not merged yet but last I saw the Btrfs maintainers are now happy with the code

I hear you, I'been on the edge for a while. though for me the two biggest factors are that a) I really don't need desktop power at home and b) I'd really miss Arch Linux. Fedora is great but I really couldn't go back to a non-rolling distribution.

Gonna go @AMD or @intel? Or maybe keeping things really interesting and close to home with a @RaptorEng @OpenPOWERorg system?

"An update on bradfitz"
After ~12.5 years at Google and ~10 years working on Go, it's time for me to do something new. Tomorrow is my last day at Google. 👋
I'll still be involved with #golang but less, and differently.

Now I'm fantasizing about Brad joining you at @oxidecomputer. Sounds like a place at exactly that early growth phase he's talking about in the post!

I still remember how much effort you put into guiding me when I did my first (and only) Go runtime CL. Thanks Brad! In the next couple of days I'll have my first real Linux Kernel commit and I might not have felt comfortable enough for that without that first real contribution.

I've got these @peakdesignltd packing cubes that allow separatio of the worn and fresh clothes. So I just take the cubes out of the bag, drop the worn clothes in the washing basket and deal with the fresh ones in the next couple of days.

Hi Tech Twitter, I'm a long time Linux user & developer. I want to get #Windows10 for a VM to run tax software, I used to run on the business Windows laptop. I'm completely lost. Where do you get a legit Windows license without buying a CD and can you just download an ISO?!

I think the bigger factor, at least in Germany, is that in my generation computer games were really geared towards boys. These were often a gateway to CS, especially back when one needed more technical knowledge (LAN, IP) to play on the PC. Much better ratio among older engineers
