How does the brain produce discrete categorical outputs from continuous inputs? In new preprint from lab, @nagarajmahajan solves this fundamental question with tour de force modeling+ (causal) expts! (Hint: donuts in the brain!) Happy holidays, all! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

2/2 Hidden behind the optic tectum and its role in spatial selection, is a small group of midbrain inhibitory neurons, Imc, that resolves selection better (more categorically) and earlier! Imc is essentially the kingmaker to OT's ability to signal the highest priority stimulus.

SpineZap is a MATLAB based package that helps the user 'pick' spines quickly from image stacks, classifies type, and quantifies morphological params as well as dynamics; used in pubs from a few labs. Happy to share if interested. (Wrote this for my PhD, a while ago!)

We have a postdoc opening at Johns Hopkins: predicting brain signals using hierarchical language models. Lead a collaboration between my lab and the computational language lab of
@tallinzen. Ad: honeylab.org/join-us. I will be in Vancouver for @NeurIPSConf so please reach out!

Thread following up concept I discussed @Neurosci2019, which I believe is very imp for neuroscience: the bias of ‘human brain exceptionalism’. Our thought that human brain is the most amazing, complex, unique, etc organ, & how that bias affects discovery. Dedicated to students

I like to rewrite reviewer comments and refer to those in the revision process so that I don’t have to re-read negative reviews.
For example, I changed: “The paper lacks proper context for disinvestment/reinvestment.” to: “Develop a clear context for disinvestment/reinvestment.”
