One of my most controversial software opinions is that your sleep quality and stress level matter far, far more than the languages you use or the practices you follow. Nothing else comes close: not type systems, not TDD, not formal methods, not ANYTHING. Allow me to explain why.

Every time I end up on an checkout page I have to check my calendar to make sure it’s not 1999.

Me: Sweet! A tax refund for the first time in ten years. Maybe I’ll buy my something nice. I haven’t had extra money with all the medical expenses and not working. My body: Congrats! But you might want to look at this cracked tooth before buying anything nice. Just sayin’. 🤦‍♂️

Just rewatched Battlestar Galactica and came to realize that the Cylons had no discernible plan (despite the title sequence saying, “and they have a plan”).

If only one Deno feature makes it into Node.js, I hope it’s the ability to import from a URL.

The last thing I’ll say on this: defaults are hard. There’s always a group that’s unhappy with them no matter what they are. We offer a lot of help for new users via —init and shareable configs so people don’t have to configure from scratch.

We’ve never changed the defaults around ecmaVersion and sourceType because those cause parsing changes and are therefore more disruptive than, say, rule defaults (which have changed). I don’t think there’s a good case for changing given anyone can opt-in to what they need.

This is true. There are still a lot of people not using ESM and even those still using ES5. Defaults are not easy.

We have never changed defaults because doing so instantly breaks any config that doesn’t already have this info specified. There’s no reason to cause that level of disruption to the ecosystem. Just run —init on a new project and you’ll get exactly what you need.

It sounds like you’re talking about having sourceType: “module” as the default? In practice, very few people use the defaults. Either they use —init (which sets sourceType as needed) or a shareable config that has sourceType specified. So, no plans to change this soon.

No, this just addresses the peer deps problem (among a slew of others). What problem are you having with syntax?

I’ve proposed a new configuration mechanism to eliminate that problem. Comments welcome:
