Someone asked me to explain why those “Instagram-vs-Reality” side-by-sides of thin women standing up versus sitting down, posed versus unposed, stomach sucked in versus stomach let loose images are harmful. So I just spent like an hour of my life making an Instagram story on it.

I think it's also really interesting how the article points out most South African clothing is sized for the average Western pear shape and not the average South African pear shape. Shops cater for a more societally accepted shape, not the shape of most of their shoppers. 🤦

There are other reasons why you might not want to try clothes on in a store. If you're buying clothes for yourself that don't 'match' the gender everyone assumes you are, trying clothes on can be dangerous. This particularly affects trans, non binary and gender non conforming ppl

Then, many people don't like trying things on in those fitting rooms with the shitty lighting and the mirrors at all angles. People with mobility devices might struggle. Parents w/kids might struggle. Surely it makes sense financially to make your clothing accessible to people?

It's impossible, in South Africa, to know your 'size' because it differs store-to-store. Even within stores - I'm a size 12 in some Mr Price jeans and a 16 in others. That's a huge difference! So without trying things on, it's hard to know whether it will fit.

At the height of my mental health struggles, I was in so much physical pain that dressing took 30 minutes. I don't mean choosing an outfit: I mean putting it on my body. After that, I was exhausted. I'd never have managed trying on all clothing items before buying it.

This is more important than you might think. Having national standards for clothing sizes would make shopping more accessible for people who struggle to try outfits on in store, not to mention people who struggle with body image & gender dysphoria.

Shame doesn't make people thinner. Shame doesn't make people healthier. Shame isn't a "motivator." Shame does, however, hurt mental health, isolate people, and lead to all kinds of coping mechanisms that often harm health.

26) A book I was meant to study in 3rd year. Taiye Selasi's 'Ghana Must Go'. I struggled to read it initially but I'm glad I powered through it.
