What the heck is that? Some sort of team cheer? Physiotherapist-recommended exercise? Mating call of the feral ones?

You're old enough to remember the FDIV bug. That was caused by missing entries in a table. So there. (-:

It was also wonderful how lithe vi was back then. Started instantly, took up almost no memory, quick immediately. Compared to sed and stuff, an admin's best friend.
I have an awesome vi story that you should ask me over a drink someday. (Next time in PVD?)

Still cursor-movement level. That's handy because many of the same keystrokes work inside browser editors too. She does her Racket in WeScheme (wescheme.org), not Emacs.

Old names for Sublime Text and Atom, back when filenames had to be really short and in lower-case.

Yep. That's worth its weight in gold. It's a tough balancing act at an R1, but then again, it's good to know who you are and have quality teaching as part of your brand — because so many others don't.

I think there would be plenty of opportunities in your geographic area. If you were in my area, we would be having a serious conversation. Distance doesn't work for Brown — our students expect a (quality) classroom experience. (Parens because not 100% sure about some people… 🙄)

That's not a half-terrible theory, actually. In fact, I've done most of my sysadmin'ing in vi. But I think that's partly historic: a sysadmin has to depend on whatever is installed, and until at least the mid 90s, Emacs wasn't guaranteed to be installed.

I'm cool with that – I'm totally comfortable with vi. Freaks out some people. It's like saying I'm both Catholic and Protestant or something.

I periodically quiz our kid about Emacs keybindings. Fortunately, @KathiFisler and I agree on essential editorial matters. twitter.com/justinesherry/…

Agreed. Though reintegrating people from industry can be tricky. (Even @PeterLudemann <-;.) Some have the attitude that everything in academia is broken and they're here to be our saviors. Or, that they've earned their rest…and academia is where they're going to take it!
