Good advice in this article. I wish I'd had this when I started my PhD.

Here are some (this varies by field!): - Space/time to play: w/ few daily constraints, can explore new topics without too much risk. - Project ownership: you can define and drive your own agenda, difficult in companies. - You decide what's interesting/important, not a company.

I absolutely appreciate the need for 's advice - a lot of people make a mistake by starting grad school w/o considering these points (I agree with them all). But funny that now I often defend getting a PhD b/c there are benefits that people don't tend to think about.

If the thing you dream of doing with your life isn’t (1) producing academic research, or (2) teaching, grad school probably isn’t the most efficient, or even necessarily a desirable, way to do it.

For every hour you spend learning a genuinely useful new way to think about the world, you spend at least twice that long learning the highly specific craft of academic research. Which has been useful approximately zero times in my non-academic career.

Graduate school is a highly specific process for training people to be one or both of (1) a researcher churning out research, or (2) a teacher educating undergraduates.

I just spent 45 minutes talking to a college grad about going to grad school, and it occurred to me that smart, passionate people are misled into thinking that getting a PhD is a great way to spend time thinking and learning and writing. It’s not. A PhD is vocational education.
