"Berkeley rejected 76% of qualified applicants without even considering their teaching skills, their publication history, their potential for academic excellence, or their ability to contribute to their field."

"Micro-USB was embraced as the "Universal Charging Solution" by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in October 2009." From the wiki page for USB. It's possible to *endorse* a universal standard without *enforcing* it. EU tends to take adversarial positions.

The politeness rule--that if you can't say something positive, don't say anything at all--is close to reversed in intellectual contexts: if you don't have an objection, stay silent. So 'mixed' contexts (e.g. Twitter) create problems.

If they are insulting, block them by all means, but if they are not it's dangerous. I feel like this is a recipe for echo-chambers, and by extension, a drift towards extremes without constructive disagreement. Was blocked by Taleb (whose work I like) for reasonable objections.

Common market was the main benefit of the EU. Track-record for decision-making and action is abysmal. On the Crimean crisis, the migration crisis, the financial crisis in South Europe, and now the attitude to Brexit. argues that it lacks falsification mechs

As a continent those are perhaps admirable sentiments, but as a political body the EU should be focusing on the structural issues. Framing the debate as the angels of unity against the demons of division may *FEEL* good, but it doesn't resolve the intractable issues.

As far as I'm aware, there isn't a single example of high speed rail paying off. Last I heard of Spanish high speed rail it hadn't even recouped the investment. Sure, we can connect Northern cities to London, but at what cost?

One of the disciplines of cognitive science is philosophy. It lays out frameworks and hypotheses that direct empirical research. Fodor's modularity of mind is an example. In reality, science is nested in philosophy. Even to reject philosophy is to engage in it.

I'm thinking about putting together a document with links to lots of good, freely available resources for learning comp neuro. What would everyone suggest? Top of my head, I know about the Gerstner textbook, INCF training spaces, and notes just posted. What else?

'The theory of Evolution'... By natural selection. The natural selection part is key because it did get falsified that natural selection was the only mechanism and it is likely we still don't understand evolution for mathematical reasons.

Depends on your definition of rationality: arguably what you call post-rational could be subsumed into rationality. Particularly if we talk about ecological rationality.

GPT-2 is a test of empiricism. GOFAI was a test of nativism. So far, they have both failed. Solution: neuro-symbolic approaches exhibit the best of both worlds. Prior world knowledge to reason compositionally, alongside flexibility to generalize to new experiences

Indeed, Jon Anderson, another former Aussie Prime Minister, has the opposite perspective. Many people actively want Brexit to go badly to show the people they shouldn't vote 'against their best interests' (read masters). Very strange and extreme, we should all try make it work.
