No - consensus is not always appropriate for all things. I do teach facilitation and some group decision-making.

I actually used to do everything by consensus —I come out of a political culture that put consensus first. But I believe now that there are many ways of democratic decision making, and many ways of building collaborative culture, and a rigid attachment to consensus is unhelpful.

I believe strongly that most people, if given the choice, would not choose to get their energy from a system that pollutes their air, poisons their water, threatens their children, and harms their neighbor. We can have a vision for climate action that improves people’s lives.

In addition, many of the things we need to do for a livable climate are things that will improve people’s lives: breaking up corporate Ag, ending environmental racism, better transit, more leisure time, greener neighborhoods, good jobs.

'consensus' is often tyrannical in its insistence that all people must agree on a particular issue, or that a group cannot advance without an often unobtainable 100%. it's less 'radically inclusive' and more 'allows individuals to hijack a process' leading to cynicism

Complicated! Most victories are incomplete & it can be good to celebrate small successes. I’d say there are 2 distinct pitfalls: 1. Putting story over substance. 2. Having a leadership tier w secret knowledge that contradicts what everyone else learns (deeply toxic).

I appreciate your sharing your experience. I need to do some research. If you have recommended reading, I would appreciate suggestions. Some things came up w a simple search. I will start there. Was your experience in a hierarchical setting of any kind?
