The cops shown here brutally attacking protestors followed the orders of Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best. We not only should’ve cut salaries, but should’ve also called for her resignation. Celebrating her tenure as chief is a spit in the face to those fighting against injustice.

That's it for me. I am incredibly proud to see a brilliant Black woman, and HBCU grad, chosen as a Vice Presidential nominee. I've done political work my whole life. It's rarely things dreams are made of. Kamala Harris is the most progressive VP nominee in American history.

Among current United States Senators, I would rank Kamala Harris in the Top 3 on justice reform issues. As we know, she has a mastery of the system, but has evolved and grown a great deal on this. Her remarks on justice over the past 4 months were the best of ANY Senator.

With that said, I actually think it took guts for Joe Biden to choose Kamala Harris. She was a STRONG critic of him during most of the primaries. Maybe the strongest - on the Crime Bill, and a lot more. He knew this, of course, but chose her anyway.

I have about 15 substantive critiques of Kamala's time as District Attorney of San Francisco. I'd give her a D+/C- for how harsh she was as DA. That ended in 2011. Every year, for the past 9 years since she left that position, she has gotten MUCH better on justice reform.

Two encouraging thoughts from me on the choice of Kamala Harris as VP. 1. She was the most progressive candidate among the credible finalists for VP. 2. She has improved drastically on all justice & policing-related issues since she was last District Attorney in 2011.

Just so we all understand. Our Police Chief quit her job because her salary got cut from $294k to $275 in an effort to better fund Black communities. Seattle liberals who believe in taxing the rich but hate the idea of cutting $300k police salaries is part of the problem.

Portland's brand-new DA just announced he was dismissing hundreds of cases of protesters arrested by the Portland police. I had talked to him in the spring about what criminal justice reform and fighting mass incarceration means to him:

Please don't start acting like Biden now has this thing in the bag. He doesn't. It's not over. Not even close. We've been down that road before. Biden-Harris will have to win in Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, New Mexico. And have to compete in Georgia, Texas, Arizona.

MORE: California state records also show that Ivanka Trump donated to Harris too. It was a donation of $2,000 in 2014.

NBC News: According to California state records, President Trump -- while a private citizen -- twice donated to Kamala Harris while she was a candidate for state AG. A total of $6,000 in 2011 and 2013 combined. Image:

The Democrats now have a presidential ticket that reflects the American people better than the GOP ticket and every presidential ticket in US history. It’s not everything. It’s not the crushing of racism + sexism. It’s not the freeing of Black womanhood. But it can be the start.

Congratulations to , who will make history as our next Vice President. She understands what it takes to stand up for working people, fight for health care for all, and take down the most corrupt administration in history. Let’s get to work and win.

Douglass’ words still have meaning today, as Americans continue to fight for equal rights and to end racial injustice. Thank you, Mr. Douglass.

On August 11, 1841, Frederick Douglass was invited to speak at the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society's annual convention. In front of a white audience, Douglass gave his first speech that got him noticed and put him on the path to becoming a lecturer.
