The Govt and Labor have voted down a motion in the Senate by to increase Newstart by $75 a week. Welfare groups and business alike have called for an increase in Newstart and Youth Allowance.

The ALP did not explicitly agree to raising the rate before the election; the only thing they committed to was having an inquiry into the payments. When asked if they would pursue that inquiry from opposition, Shadow Treasurer said they would not.
