The Govt and Labor have voted down a motion in the Senate by to increase Newstart by $75 a week. Welfare groups and business alike have called for an increase in Newstart and Youth Allowance.

The ALP did not explicitly agree to raising the rate before the election; the only thing they committed to was having an inquiry into the payments. When asked if they would pursue that inquiry from opposition, Shadow Treasurer said they would not.

They can come from the Senate, but it's rare. This wasn't a bill, it was a motion.

Unfortunately the Senate can't initiate finance bills, but at least Labor could have given token support.
