Important context - Romney isn't up for re-election as Utah senator until 2024. Free to cast vote predicting party may be in a different place by then.

"...was wrong, grievously wrong. We are all footnotes at best in the annals of history but in the most powerful nation on earth, the nation conceived in liberty and justice, that distinction is enough for any citizen."

ROMNEY'S CLOSING WORDS
"I will only be one name among many, no more, no less, to future generations of Americans who look at the record of this trial. They will note merely that I was among the senators who determined that what the president did...

Romney on voting to remove Trump: "With my vote I will tell my children, their children, that I did my duty to the best of my ability, believing that my country expected it of me."

ROMNEY:
"The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust"
"What the president did was wrong, grievously wrong"
"What he did was not perfect, no. It was a flagrant assault of our electoral rights, our national security and our fundamental values"

Senate floor was almost totally empty when Romney delivered his brutal speech. He stood at the far right of the chamber, reporters leaning out to see him. Headed straight for the door once done.

Romney said he knew decision would trigger attacks from Trump and fury from other Republicans. Used this as an argument to prove he was acting on pure motives (b/c it's so evidently against his political interests)

Take this in for a moment - the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee is voting to remove its 2016 presidential nominee from office.

Speech heavy with history and God. Romney said he was just a "footnote" in our times but he would tell his children and grandchildren that he stood by his oath of office.

Wow. Just been in Senate as Mitt Romney delivered an absolutely scathing rebuke of Trump. "Appalling" conduct. The worst of abuses of power. Will vote to REMOVE. Held hands clasped as if in prayer for parts.

When more than half the Senate, including every other member of his own party, did the wrong thing, I think effusive praise is actually exactly the right response for someone doing the right thing.

In my experience, this attitude is traditionally much more prevalent on the activist/electoral side of things, where things are (and are seen) as much more zero-sum.
Inside the legislatures, people are much more likely to value moderates from other side when they cross over.

This is one of the most destructive attitudes in politics, but you see it over and over again. The last thing you want to do is alienate the people on the other side of the aisle most likely to ally with you. twitter.com/theglipper/sta…

If you see all but one doing wrong ... and one alone standing for right ... and seeing all that, it's your impulse to snark at the one, then maybe you should check that impulse. Or even search your own conscience: when did *I* last break with *my* many to do right on *my* own?

"Corrupting an election to keep oneself in office is perhaps the most abusive and destructive violation of one's oath of office that I can imagine."
I agree, @MittRomney. Voting to convict this president is an act of patriotism. Thank you for yours.
