Provocative post by @ttunguz re: whether VC industry has gotten so big, could we see a VC firm this decade follow in footsteps of PE firms and become publicly-traded entities? tomtunguz.com/is-venture-cap…

Yes & the first one to do it will be A16Z = it is set up as an equivalent of Fidelity/Vanguard w/ individual managers leading a sector specific fund sharing a common platform for IR, fundraising, mktg = the thesis will be "if you want to buy a piece of Silicon Valley, buy A16Z"

GSV went this route and - albeit a different model - venture debt firms have too. From my vantage pt, I think we are going to see more along the trend of “non traditional” sources of capital become part of the private market ecosystem.

There a few public funds already.
Pros: permanent capital
Cons: NAV calculation 🤣
many people dont get the J curve and stock actually trades in a similar fashion.

EQT IPO'ed. Primarily a PE fund, but they also run VC funds. Draper Esprit in the UK is a public VC fund. Sutter Rock Capital is a public fund that holds late stage venture backed companies. Don't think we'll see any name brand VCs list their GP stakes publicly soon though.

One correction @ttunguz - a venture has gone public - @DraperEsprit in the UK and they’ve done so pretty successfully - techcrunch.com/2016/06/14/why…
