There will be a lot more coming out later on the specifics of this tech, but for those wondering where we've been taking Virtual Production @ ILM... take a glimpse at this article:

I can't comment except to direct you to public statements from Jon Favreau about the involvement of real-time rendering in production. :)

We’ve got an associate rendering engineer position open. If you are (or know someone who is) at that career stage who would like to work on some seriously cool stuff, check it out: jobs.disneycareers.com/job/san-franci…

Cute idea. By the way, you have a typo in your Henyey-Greenstein function: it should be 4 * pi, not 4 + pi. The sanity check is to see if it integrates to 1 over the sphere. I'd curious to hear if this typo came from elsewhere, since I've seen various H-G errors in graphics books

There's also a tendency to forget (because the fn is built in) that smoothstep involves this remapping followed by a unit s-curve function. So if the range is user parameterised, you can precompute 1 / (B - A) and -A / (B - A) and save a bit of ALU in the shader.

I am planning to recruit a PhD student in the upcoming admissions cycle (deadline: Dec. 15). Are you interested in differentiable rendering, rendering systems, and material appearance? Do you like hacking on Mitsuba? Please get in touch/spread the word! rgl.epfl.ch pic.twitter.com/8DQLDiWqex

The second (with @gllmLoubet and @nholzschuch) introduces a new way of differentiating those pesky visibility-induced discontinuities by performing a change of variables that freezes them in place. This lets one do cool stuff :). rgl.epfl.ch/publications/L… pic.twitter.com/BRuRvfiixc

We have 2 papers at #siggraphasia that together make up #mitsuba2, RGL's new fully differentiable, vectorized, spectral, and polarized renderer. The first (w/@merlin_ND, Delio Vicini, @tizianzeltner) explains the system, which looks a lot like a compiler: rgl.epfl.ch/publications/N… pic.twitter.com/xrmTTEpAFl

For those that are interested, the technical term is “multiple cattering”.
It’s hard to tell for sure in this case, however, as it’s not a consistent fur-nace test.
