You can't be an adult without a fountain pen. Can't be done.
Do not at me, goblins. You reek of bubble gum. The bubble gum flavor, too. Not even a classy mint.

ooh yeah I wondered about that when I was a hypnosis subject more frequently

there's a bunch of altered-state stuff that seems to do the "relaxing priors" thing in the way psychedelics do so dramatically
meditation, weed, hypnosis, masklike states, certain types of performance...all seem like "cousins" to me

Tarot is "fairly wrong, moderately useful"
hypnosis is "unclear how wrong but not *that* wrong, unclear *how* useful but definitely useful"

it's not woo but it's hard to study and hard to explain without Lots Of Words
and anything that is primarily built around the imprecise alteration of subjective experience is gonna be a bit fuzzy til we have better science
hypnosis is more in the cluster with meditation

just describing some reflexive annoyance that there isn't more material on these topics that engages with it in a way that feels compatible with my preferences

alas most of the people who produce content on these things are woo-meisters
I think that is actually the core of my frustration
the audience for their material wants smartass skeptics or True Believers, and very little in between

anyways it's very annoying to me that people engage with woo the Wrong Way
because my way is objectively better

frequently after I binge on one of these topics I come out of it with a kind of hangover
dying to think about something a little conceptually *crunchier*

but I also feel very strongly that leaning into any new model should be somewhat constrained to a playful/exploratory state
and the model should be assessed for validity, etc *outside* of of this sandbox

so when I'm playing with something like tarot, or hypnosis*
I feel that it's hard to extract whatever value there is if I don't lean into the idea and take a very open internal stance

my ideal method of engagement (which I do get fairly close to meeting, much of the time!) is to treat these things like a sandbox
you don't wanna be the kid who's loudly reminding everyone that the action figures and barbie dolls aren't ACTUALLY superheroes and space aliens
