"Although Dunbar-Hester [...] focuses on a fairly niche community, her conclusions are refreshingly universal & her insights will be valuable to many people seeking to make their industries more diverse & inclusive." ––@historein on @scrivenix's new book

Where does that lead? My book Hacking Diversity has deep dive reframing “representation” & also argues we need to extend beyond tech horizons to confront injustice. (& we also need to challenge narrative that tech is autonomous/can’t be regulated!) 3/3 #EthicalCS

And push beyond “representation” in industries, to consider structural issues (w/o losing sight of inclusive goals & practices). E.g., AI is constitutively reliant on massified surveillance, & surveillance at scale is constitutively racist (New Jim Code by @ruha9). 2/ #EthicalCS

What are aspirational regulatory & technological shapes of new models we could imagine? What about nonprofit, transparent & accountable SM platform for public sphere activity at very large & community scales? See new book Democracy w/o Journalism by @VWPickard 3/3 #EthicalCS

But what about going further: robust public media? Tax huge commercial SM co’s & ISPs & use revenue for nat’l media (including adversarial journalism) + local (cheaper!) community media, online & off. An e.g. is @PhillyCAM, subsidized by Comcast. 2/ #EthicalCS

A3: Again: journalism! Research is inconclusive re true influence of manipulation (e.g. bots, as @EthanZ said), but a bright spot is that trust in local journalism is high (tinyurl.com/yc8sbtu5). Anti-trust & breaking up huge corp’s like Google, FB is a start. 1/ #ethicalCS

Agree w this but would also place responsiblity to regulate on, well, regulators. Some of these issues are not for designers to solve. But 100% w/ you that designation of tech design as apolitical is a politics! #EthicalCS

A2: Foreground prob’s journalism is facing. Lot of issues on display in this op-ed: tinyurl.com/ybgfkknu. Buttons or algorithms might change, but it illustrates problems w non-accountable commercial SM co’s in realm of news. Recommend Anti-Social Media, @sivavaid #ethicalCS
