Good piece/thread. I think not feasible for most…but does describe the high end of niche content creation!
Fuck it, thought experiment: under what circumstance could *you* imagine paying *me* $1k / year?
Like…would you pay $$$ for a 💯 personal reading coach? 😉 twitter.com/ljin18/status/…

My dream tech conference is all about technologies of reading, learning, librarianship, information:
-history of book-making innovations
-evolving approaches to organizing knowledge
-radical futures of reading, pedagogy & more

Yeah and I find myself reluctant to blog stuff that feels ~too random~, though it might be fun & possibly even useful to just do it anyway!
(ditto the idea of making a personal wiki to publicly share all my sweet sweet notes with the world lol…appealing but also overwhelming!)

Yeah, I don't think a new network either. I like Twitter but not great for discoverability / longevity; I saw a stat the other day half life of a tweet engagement is ~ 20 minutes! More social blogging could be great, agree norms = key. Some more thoughts: twitter.com/schlagetown/st…

I think a solution requires both:
- putting more stuff out publicly than we may be inclined to, increasing the long tail of random shared knowledge
- search optimization on both sides: more structure/context *and* normalizing that such things may be findable at all

Good point about context; this is a challenge on both the 'share the thing' and 'find the thing' sides!
I might not think to share something useful; you might not think to look for it (or know how)
Even w/ YT's search abilities…maybe that video w/ 37 views *should* have 3700

Looks like some good recs here. An area I'd like to learn more about as well, preferably via books that are enjoyable to read (not dry academic texts) yet also substantial (not overly-pop lightweight gloss)…always a tricky balance haha twitter.com/wilks_isaac/st…

Like blogging, but with (somehow) really good discoverability / information architecture + (maybe more importantly) lower friction and stronger social norms for sharing random fun things w/o any specific expectations! twitter.com/robinsloan/sta…

Fun list from @tylercowen, books on *information*
I got two of these recently, Everything is Miscellaneous & The Book of Disquiet. The Glass Bead Game on my list for a while too.
Another great one I'm reading currently — Sorting Things Out: Classification and Its Consequences twitter.com/five_books/sta…

Ha, this is a good point, but also… the more I read, the less I seem to care about note-taking at all!
I think taking notes while reading is rarely worth it, unless you're doing very specific research. Just enjoy your reading & let it slowly, subconsciously shape your brain! twitter.com/nateliason/sta…

Good point! Most folks who seem v successful w/ this model seem to be mid-career, like 5-10+ yrs experience making [x]
I'm sure engagement / conversion varies a ton. Definitely good idea to a) make sure to have a strong, unique value prop & b) sweat the details to make it great

Includes some solid tips re: launching a membership program:
-start building audience & content production muscles *now*
-have clear goals / targets
-spend some time iterating before launch
-be willing to commit for a year+ to build momentum and understand what you're capable of
