If you fixate on the central target (no saccades), the peripheral targets disappear at some points.
Phenomena: motion-induced blindness
Neural mechanisms: no consensus...

oh i did that too in grad school.
But nothing prepares you emotionally for having 10 proposals rejected in a row.

also particularly on-brand is that I _started_ my job with one NSF rejection, from having written a proposal as an associate before I was officially with UA.

oh yeah, I heard it from Juliana :) "the trick is to write them faster than they can reject them"
In my defense, I followed it, I'm 2-16 so far :p

It's super scary, let me not understate that; and there's complicated questions about how corona viruses get to infect humans in the first place. But I can't help but wonder if we'd be saying the same things if it started in Atlanta.

idk; the scary part is how little we still know about it.
NYC has ~10k cases of influenza per week at a mortality rate that's smaller but not catastrophically so. Wuhan is a big place! Bigger than NYC by population.

Only partially related, but next time I hear that wuhan is a province I’m going to blow a goddamn gasket. Can be people not be arsed to stop, think and google for ~7.4 seconds?

Have you seen Emma strubell’s paper on this exactly? arxiv.org/pdf/1906.02243… it’s a good read

@RLukeDuBois say I want to write my software synth from scratch - do you know good reading material? I know my way around an FFT, but after making some obvious (in hindsight) mistakes while writing a simple pitch bend of a sine wave, I think I need to hit the books for basics...

I *just* realized that "The future is already here, it's just not evenly distributed" is pretty much the same statement as "The past is never dead. It's not even past."

Well the other one isn’t green so we’re good there. Here it was white vs deep red. It’s very obvious based on luminance as well

if I'm wearing a red lanyard, everyone knows (because they were told at the opening session) that I prefer that my pictures are not shared publicly. It's also enforced via the code of conduct, which is particularly nice.
