regarding what to say instead: everyone is different & it might be best to actually ask what kind of support they want. generally i think it's best to avoid comments about appearance & focus more on achievement-oriented things: they're working so hard/you're so proud of them!!!

it's so tricky because of COURSE people are only trying to be supportive by saying it but this stuff warps ur brain so much that even the most well-intentioned of comments can hurt a lot!!!

receiving comments like that/really any comments about appearance no matter how well-intentioned ESPECIALLY during the beginning stages of recovery are usually unhelpful at best and at worst really really harmful

ppl asking why not: disordered thoughts in the midst of an ed often center around a desire specifically to look abnormal/unhealthy/etc. in recovery, ppl gain the weight back LONG before those disordered thoughts go away, if they ever do.
