Going back, again, to 'Anti-Memoirs', the show I curated for in Goa last year - Imam Hussein presided over this room in the exhibition, with works by Zarina Hashmi and Veer Munshi: a panja in one of Zarina's works viewed along a sight-line from Veer's 'Zuljanah'.

"On 9 Muharram, as if putting on his own shroud, Hussain spoke: 'Tomorrow our end will come. I ask you to go away to safety. I free you, I do not hold you back. Night will give you a cover; use it as a steed.'..." - Agha Shahid Ali, 'From Amherst to Kashmir'

Sorry, it is not possible to be ‘a Hindu Rashtra’ AND ‘committed to the Constitution’ of India. The RSS is trying to sound benign, but Hindu supremacist hyper-nationalism is NOT benign, full stop.

Aayat-e-Nau This new verse When in jail, this new verse came as a revelation: the Quran lies within the Gita and the Gita within the Quran. What amazing reconciliation for the Shaikh and the Brahmin for in their final scuffle neither did one win, nor the other lose. 1/2

When a woman says, “This man raped me a long time ago,” we say, “But that was in the past.” When a girl says, “This boy raped me last night,” we say, “But we can’t wreck his future!” And there she stands, suspended between his past and his future, with no value of her own."

before i was on twitter, i didn’t know half of the poetry prizes that exist. i’m glad to know more now & to celebrate the good news. but i do think being on twitter can create this impression that if you’re not publishing & winning 24-7, you’re doing it wrong. this is not true.
