The ability to restore partial function to mammalian brains 4 hours after death has raised many questions regarding human consciousness and what happens to it when we die. There was an excellent feature last week on this in the National Post in Canada.

This shows death is not a philosophical notion, but a biological process that can be manipulated after it has occurred. There is clearly a time after which cells become irreversibly damaged and we can never come back... but this and other studies suggest it might be hours later.

Discussing the implications of a study published today in Nature. Scientists have been able to restore function to brains four hours post-mortem. This illustrates the growing understanding that it is only after we die that the cells inside the body die.

We focus on many broad aspects of cardiac arrest research - including predictive models of survival, methods to enhance oxygen delivery during CPR, methods to monitor the brain, methods to reduce brain injuries and finally consciousness during cardiac arrest.

In true "cardiac arrest" - CPR only raises diastolic blood pressure little and 15% brain blood flow - not enough 4 brain function - all brain stem reflexes absent + brain remains flatlined - in former case, people wake up, in latter no sign of consciousness or brain activity.

Those people also treated with CPR. But as heart is still beating, the addition of CPR enables the "diastolic" blood pressure to rise high enough to get enough blood in brain to "wake" people up again. In true "cardiac arrest" there is no heart beat and no blood pressure -

A very interesting point was raised regarding CPR induced consciousness. Sometimes a persons heart has not actually stopped but is beating very weakly - therefore the person still has a blood pressure albeit so low that a pulse cannot be felt...

A flip side is - we can study what happens to human mind & consciousness after people go beyond threshold of death from biological perspective. Millions been resuscitated back & paradoxically many report full awareness from a time when brain would have been expected to shutdown.

However, we want to insure we bring back a whole person, free of brain injury and importantly free of disorders of consciousness - i.e. a whole person, with an intact brain and mind and without disorders such as vegetative state.

Biologically cardiac arrest and death by cardiopulmonary criteria are synonymous. Thus, by studying events that occur after the heart stops, we aim to identify ways to bring more people back and without brain injury.
