if you’re ever feeling sad just remember that the Old English word for squirrel is ‘Acweorna’ which translates as ‘oak botherer’

Apparently wombats in fire effected areas are not only allowing other animals to take shelter in their deep, fire-resistant burrows but are actively herding fleeing animals into them. We’re seeing more leadership and empathy from these guys than the entire Federal government.

"Let go of your data": upload it to a repository that issues DOIs because 'e-mailing authors for data is neither a sustainable nor a reliable way of getting it'. Publishers & peer reviewers need to insist on openly available data. column:

Surprised Eel Historian Dec 11
So you're a medieval landlord, collecting property rent from your peasants in eels. How do you measure them? Eels were usually counted in units called sticks (25 eels) -- likely from the number of eels you can smoke on a stick at one time. 10 sticks of eels was called a bind.

An Air Quality Index over 200 is classified as 'hazardous'. The current AQI for the Sydney East region? 2214. Sirens are going off all over the city as the fire brigade respond to alarms triggered by the smoke. And this is what it's like 30km away from the nearest fire.

One of the curious outcomes of being President of is that I get a LOT of letters and emails from people telling me that they're praying for my immortal soul. Unlike medieval kings, I don't even need to pay them to do it...
