IN microcircuits might be different from subcortical long-range VIP projections, which seem to be involved in circadian rhythms and metabolic regulation, some of these are e.g. also co-releasing dopamine.

Wondering about that as well. There is some work on peptide effects on excitatory/inhibitory plasticity & neuronal excitability – which would make sense for these circuits - but unfortunately mainly with exogenous peptide application and little to nothing specifically for VIP…

Thanks! - and we did test this. Have a look at SFig 9. VIP photoactivation is not sufficient to induce associative learning. Which is actually not surprising: VIPs are mainly gating excitatory inputs to PNs, plus learning might additionally require neuromodulatory signals.
