I was recently burned by this fact too. We are deuterosomes, but we’re modified to the point where are mouth holes form first. I told a lot of people that we form asshole first before I knew...

I don’t think solving collective action problems is something a single institution can solve. There are many distinct kinds of those problems, appearing in different contexts.

Also it took ~10 years to isolate the cells in culture. An astonishing achievement.

I love when we can see them three dimensionally! There’s got to be a way we can get footage like this but really high res.

That is how I would define it, because I think it’s v. important whether the determinants of a feature trace back to within an organism or outside of it. What are some of the advantages of your definition?

Yes, something coming in from the env can disrupt development, but what matters here is the role of the env in the typical course of development of limb control. This seems to be a perfect case where env doesn't have decisive impact on developmental outcome.

I think it's a category error to describe the sensory inputs derived from twitching as env inputs. This is precisely a case in which the env can be decoupled since reasonable variation of the env will not change the fact that the rat will learn how to control its limbs.

There's a chicken-and-egg problem here. Yes, the organism is the source of its own feedback, but the structures that make that part of this developmental system possible are ultimately brought into existence by processes governed by the genome.

This particular process as described here only involves components of the organism interacting with each other, interaction with the environment isn't a factor. These interactions are ultimately orchestrated by the genome.

This is a very interesting paper, however I fail to see why this incredible self-organizing developmental process that gives rise to a functioning limb control system shouldn't be described as innate.

Does something have to be modulating this, or could it result from random fluctuations in gene expression? Biomolecular processes are subject to thermal noise, therefore clones are inevitably slightly different from each other.

These interactions are between parts of the developing organisms, and are ultimately orchestrated by the genome, are they not? Why shouldn’t these guided interactions be seen as running a genetic program?

Thanks! Wasn’t sure if it was an empirical thing or a physics of computation Kind of result. I wonder if this relationship could be derived in a general way?
