The idea that we take progress for granted reminds me of something my mom used to say to us when we acted like spoiled brats, “you guys need a war! [to help you appreciate what you have]”.

She grew up poor but nothing in comparison to my dad who grew up during the Spanish civil war and spent a year in a concentration camp with my uncle and grandma, while my grandpa went to fight for the republic.
