My theory makes short work of the Mary's Room thought experiment.
When Mary sees red for the first time, she doesn't learn any new fact, but she gets to *be* a physical system experiencing Red. The difference between knowledge of redness and redness is indexical.

To some extent the computational processes in one person's head at one time and another's at another time are identical. Then they can apply the you=S condition and be sure about the experience.
This is confusing for us because of our sense of individual identity though.

Different humans are biologically different organisms but computationally the same; we all have almost the same POVself. Thus it makes sense to make a deal with all sufficiently similar computational processes to treat each other well. But that's really all it is - a deal.

A system S only has a truth value about whether it is really experiencing qualia Q if you=S. This is even true for past and future versions of you, since they are different physical systems.

Or whether physical system S "really sees red", "really experiences pleasure", etc.
These objective facts about subjective existence just don't exist.
The problem then is how to explain your own experiences, how to deal with other humans' experience-claims, etc.

I think I have a solution to the hard problem of consciousness. Not sure how original it is.
I will call it "Qualia Relativity"
The reason we can't seem to solve the hard problem is because we set up an observer-independent fact about whether physical system S "is conscious".

I nominate this tweet by @karpathy as pretty much the most apt and pithy summary of the 2010s and likely the 2020s as well. twitter.com/karpathy/statu…

Too long to fit into a tweet!
However they were obviously not all good. We put Alan Turing into jail for being gay during that time - this isn't really justifiable.
But there is an issue of the victors writing history, we see these things through a warped lens.

I disagree - 1950 social + 2020 material is probably better than 2020 for both. Of course I don't know that for sure but that's my suspicion.

That's a fair point, but if you average over everyone it might be the case that 1950 social "technology" was better on average.
Average utility might not be the right measure, but that's what this poll is going to find.

yes, but these are large physical systems. In 10,000 years the sea level might well rise a lot but in your lifetime it will rise up to your knee.

sea level is rising at 3mm per year, or just over 1'' per decade, that's 1 foot per century at the current rate.
It is projected to speed up, but we are talking about 2 feet in a century.
