the only job for which I’m remotely qualified is nineteenth-century poet who is foppish and sensitive and cries at the sight of a tree and writes passionate letters to the gardener’s daughter and coughs blood into a handkerchief and dies at the age of nineteen.

Reading isn't important because it helps get you a job. It's important because it gives you room to exist beyond the reality you're given. Reading makes the world better. It is how humans merge. How minds connect. Dreams. Empathy. Understanding. Escape. Reading is love in action.

Word of the day: "thrips" -- aka "thunderflies", "storm bugs"; those tiny black insects that swarm on humid midsummer days––often drawn to brightly coloured clothes, or sticking to sweaty skin. Thrips (from the ancient Greek θρίψ, "woodworm") have been around since the Permian.

Great parallels between Boris Johnson & Jeremy Corbyn: great campaigners, idolised by fans; twice divorced; hopeless with money; utterly disorganised; scant on detail; avoid media interviews, press conferences or scrutiny

Listening to Johnson on the BBC just now reminded me of Orwell’s last diary entry, on overhearing “upper-class English voices... And what voices! A sort of over-fedness, a fatuous self-confidence, a constant bah-bahing of laughter about nothing... No wonder everyone hates us so.”
