I was groomed & sexually abused by 2 of my leaders. Shaun O’Brien groomed me & abused me when I was 13. He was 24. Scott Frerking groomed & abused me when I was 16. He was 27. The base leaders Tom & Cindy Bauer knew about it & did nothing. My story isn’t uncommon.

I told a friend who told her dad. He was the base director of . He confronted Cindy Bauer who was the base leader of . She protected Scott & lied for him. Scott berated me for telling on him. He shamed me for not keeping our “secret”.

The thing is, it wasn’t such a well-kept secret. These men groomed me in full view of base leadership, students & leaders, local pastors & clergy. They manipulated me to believe I was their peer. They made me believe I was safe & special & then violated me.

Years later when my mom confronted Cindy Bauer abt these men, Cindy told my mom that I asked for it with my flirtatious behavior. That it was confusing to the men bc although I was a child I looked like a woman w curves. Cindy Bauer blamed me for those men violating me.

Youth With A Mission is a breeding ground for sexual abuse. They preach toxic tenants of & secure the power of toxic men by keeping women & girls under their thumbs. I know scores of stories of abuse in YWAM. I know scandal coverups & financial corruption.

If u have survived the toxic culture of YWAM, I invite u to share ur story, out ur abusers & use this hashtag to expose the duplicitous, abusive nature of one of the world’s biggest colonizing organizations. Trauma can be healed. We can heal each other.

I grew up on Maui and knew the Bauers. I’m so sorry this happened to you and no one protected you when you asked for help.

There was a man at campus that would always try to sit on my lap, give me neck massages, try to kiss me, hold on to me when I clearly wanted nothing to do with him. When several people confronted leadership they denied it said it wasn’t true. They said he’s harmless and fatherly.

Thank you, Haley. The work of healing is grueling but I have done so much of it alone. To hear the words “I’m sorry” & “I believe you” is water to a parched soul.
