That's the sort of thing I'm building nixbuild.net for :)

I'm using something like that for development setups. I talked about it at NixCon 2018, but didn't go into any impl details. I'm not using any of the scheduling stuff though, just setting up a network of systemd-nspawn containers managed by nomad: github.com/evidentiae/inf…

How are the builds and instances scheduled? Do you bring up all instances before starting the builds or is there any auto-scaling involved?

Nice! I recently used the GS interoperability keys for S3 to turn a bucket into a binary cache, but then you can't use service accounts.

I've moved away from using NIX_PATH now though. I pass around paths explicitly now instead: github.com/evidentiae/inf…, a bit similar to nmattia.com/posts/2019-01-… (@nasmattia)

Fully declarative and atomic deployments might not be realistic in a long time. But hey, do you now what really hurts? All those hard distributed problems _in combination_ with a stateful user API!

We use GCP Deployment Manager. In theory it is declarative. In practice, not so much. Would love to see a cloud provider built for declarative configuration from scratch, and not something weirdly implemented on top of a stateful API.

This is the approach we have too. To me, one of the main tasks of "the ops team" is to provide a sensible declarative interface for deployments. Doing so requires ugly hacks under the hood to cover up for cloud providers deficiencies.

Catching up on #NixCon2018 talks. My first video is by @rickynils on 'Nix(OS) modules everywhere!':
youtube.com/watch?v=I_KCd4…
In philosophy, it is very close to my own multi-environment, multi-service/component deployment vision. Simple, declarative, modular. Thanks for sharing.

In theory I think you should be able to build and run `nixos-rebuild` in OSX too. But I have not tried it.
