“At Tesla, using AI to solve self-driving isn’t just icing on the cake, it the cake” - @lexfridman
Join AI at Tesla! It reports directly to me & we meet/email/text almost every day. My actions, not just words, show how critically I view (benign) AI.

New blog post! bartwronski.com/2020/02/03/sep…
In this post, I explore separable convolution image filters: how can we check if a 2D image filter is separable, and how to use SVD and linear algebra to compute separable approximations to any filter represented in a numerical form.

"Rage Quitting" is acceptable if you work for a company that Rage Fires.
And if you don't want your employees to Rage Quit, then you know what you shouldn't do.

After Portal 2 shipped, I was told that CS:GO 360 did something like this to work around PWL issues. (There was actually a lot of internal politics around how to best deal with 360 PWL. Long story!)

Might have been! We had a lot of PWL related problems on 360. This approximation was a nightmare.

The 6809 Color Computer's interpreter was ported from Microsoft's earlier non-6809 versions.

These BASIC interpreters were pretty amazing. The way the MS engineers handled upgrading the interpreters (from Color Basic, to Extended Color Basis, to Disk Basic) just by inserting more ROM's was pretty impressive.

I also studied a few other interpreters, especially paying close attention to their floating point code. If you find and understand their add/mul/div routines, you're in. I used this knowledge to write a x86 float FP emulator in the 90's which I used on some commercial projects.

I've closely studied the disassemblies of several 80's BASIC interpreters. My favorite was the commented 6809 disassembly for Microsoft's Color Basic/Extended Color Basic:

I think it was some sort of psuedo-random number generator seeded from the screenspace coordinates. I "dialed down" the RGB noise until it was barely visible, but the banding was solved. We worked only on actual 360 devkits. This dithering worked wonders.
