This quote from 's new 4-book review in is 💯: "It may not be too much to say then that conservatives/Republicans are not ideological, but they think they are, while liberals/Democrats are ideological, but they think they are not."

the campaign's high point? when Schultz ran an ad whose big claim was that, and this is a direct quote, "the majority of Americans are Americans."

With no confirmed, or even nominated, Secretary of Defense for almost six months. No nominated Secretary of Homeland Security for two months. No functioning National Security Council process. An "acting" CoS. No indication the president cares, or is even more than dimly aware.

1/5 A thread: There is a severe and growing and disaster in India. Delhi just saw its highest ever June temperature of 48C. Churu, Rajasthan saw highs of 50.8C, making it the hottest place on earth.

It's wild how much the physical world changed in the generation before WWI. In 1880, NYC had no subway, no cars, and the tallest building was a church. In 1915, it had a subway, thousands of cars, a taxi system, the US’s first bike lane, and the world’s 3 tallest skyscrapers.

Of the many bizarrenesses/absurdities of the Trump era: having the Pentagon more or less openly fighting State/White House push for war, combined with the fact that the bonkers/criminal Prez is out of White House loop and may be somewhat a force for restraint.

When a national poll frontrunner wins IA or NH, they've won 11 of 13 nominations since 72 in competitive primaries. When they lost both, they're 1 of 5. Put another way, Biden will probably win the nom if he wins either. Loses both, he prob won't be.

While Sanders supporters and Warren supporters are far from perfectly overlapping, if I were Bernie's campaign I'd nonetheless be concerned that if Warren passes me in the polls at some point, it could trigger a bandwagon effect that would be hard to come back from.

— Trump’s polling is bad right now — Historically, polling changes a lot over an 18-month period — Trump-era polling has generally been very stable

Every political journalist should carry this around on a laminated card and read it every time a new poll comes out.

Good point about Trump as a weak president: he seems (publicly at least) to be skittish about war, but his own aides are chomping at the bit. This isn't new (Good morning Vietnam!) BUT is pretty unsettling. Also another data point for your tracker on this

I heard this essay on American right-wing illiberalism was great; it's even better than I thought. Must read.

This memo to “neutralize” Johnny Cash is great. I always found Nixon’s relationship with country music (Haggard, Ritter, Cash....) fascinating

DNC efforts to avoid A-List/B-List debates not all that successful. 4 of top 5 current candidates in Purple debate. Only exception is Warren in Orange debate.

Four years ago and I decided, based on a couple of random conversations, that intraparty democracy and debate qualifications might be an interesting topic to study.
