Similar moves in other repos: Although I won't blame them. Making Open Source and money at the same time is hard.

Absolutely (and Mapbox have VCs to satisfy…). Specific issue here is that people built products around an “open source stack” which won’t function any more in a year or two – you can’t keep on using BSD-licensed versions because Apple is dropping OpenGL support.

Reading more in the issue it seems that you could still create an open source fork via building mapbox-gl-native on your own and replacing the binary blob in mapbox-gl-native-android.

And down in the dependency rabbit hole mapbox-gl-native uses that uses a commercial unfriendly clause: "The Software shall be used for Good, not Evil." Looks like they didn't do a proper due diligence

There's still for Android & iOS -- it's awesome and doesn't get nearly the attention it deserves. v3 runs on Metal. does Maply depend on any of Mapbox GL?

Nope, completely Mapbox code free. That's why I don't mind MVT and the Style Sheet formats. You can always parse them yourself.
