I think essence makes so much more sense than toner. If you wash your face properly you shouldn’t have any soap left on it. So many toners strip your skin but essence generally puts moisture back after washing - you pat it on with hands rather than using a cotton pad...

Annoyingly some essences are more like serums, but a good rule is layer products lightest to heaviest.
