Does the fact that only 12% of developers (surveyed) contribute monthly indicate how few developers can afford to contribute (), or that very few recognize the benefits, or both?

The optimal model for open source is to develop shared components. These numbers tell us that much of their time is spent in planning, glue code, testing, coordination (all good) and sometimes convincing unwelcoming owners that their contribution is valuable (not so good)
