IMPORTANT. Donald Trump filed with for 2020 reelection on January 20th, 2017. This is major for several reasons. /1

First and foremost, it is NOT NORMAL. Obama filed for 2012 reelection in April 2011. Incumbent declaring before midterms is unheard of. /2

Several MAJOR implications. If officially a candidate, can use candidate status to curry favor with PACs, businesses, other organizations /3

Because he's acting as Trump the candidate, not Trump the president. Different rules apply. /4

correct. Next midterms are 2018. For context, Obama filed for 2012 candidacy 6 months after 2010 midterms.

If candidate/president distinction is real then surely orgs can campaign against president and not candidate.

they can and do campaign against policy. They're used to working around this. Just unsure of how administration will abuse.

nothing. That's the norm, to file after midterms. Both Bushes and B. Clinton did so. Not typical to file sooner.

I already knew that. I was upset by a tweet that said that Obama entered the 2012 elections too soon, in 2011
