One of the understated benefits of shadowing is that it lets you test your exception handling ie your sad path. Testing your happy path is easy. Testing the sad path ... not so much.

One of the really great things about as you note is its xDS APIs which makes it easier to manage at scale (and avoid issues w cnxn draining etc). The trade off is that it’s harder to configure. So you end up writing a translation layer like .
