We can't go back to putting a price tag on freedom. If we nationwide, the steps forward we’ve seen in NY can be enacted across the country, protecting millions of ppl from being incarcerated for the “crime” of poverty

What lawmakers call measures of “election security” are nothing but insidious attempts to suppress 1000s of eligible young Black & brown voters. Our oppression is built into the electoral system. Now, the work is to build enough power to change the rules.

Before the results of the roll in, let’s talk about the rules and structure of this system, who is included & who isn’t. Firstly, we know people have to take a day off work in order to participate, which already excludes Black & brown people who can’t afford to do so.

Our work ahead of the 2020 election is not just about candidates. It's also about all the things that are "unsexy" about elections - building infrastructure, recruiting volunteers, talking to voters. Learn more at

The incarcerated at are still facing a humanitarian crisis and inhumane conditions and Gov. has done nothing to move them out of the prison. Dial 844-899-9540 to demand action. Enough is enough!

When we talk about democracy and building power, we need to talk about the rules. And now, we need to talk about changing them.

And since caucus-goers will be predominantly white, predominantly people who can afford to take the day off to participate, these rules compound a system that already disenfranchises Black and brown voters.

These inequalities are compounded by the process, which doesn’t guarantee that the candidate with the most votes receives the most delegates. If a candidate doesn’t receive enough support to meet the apportionment threshold, their delegates have to pick someone else.

Moreover, almost 10% of Black voting-age Iowans are unable to vote after being incarcerated. And the has historically also been inaccessible to people with disabilities.

I have so much respect for the way Kaepernick has modeled change. When he exposes issues of policing and mass incarceration it forces people to reckon with the realities of racial discrimination whether they want to or not.

Every attempt by the to rehabilitate its image among Black viewers will ring hollow as long as Kaepernick is still unsigned to an NFL team. You cannot co-opt his message and blackball him at the same time.

Any presidential candidate needs to not only show us how they intend to address structural racism in medicine, but also how they plan to build the power necessary to fight corporations that profit from denying Black and brown people necessary care.

We’ve gotten used to the status quo. Every Black child in America deserves the opportunity to be as successful as their white peers, regardless of which zip code they’re born in. Time to refocus our efforts on making equality of opportunity a reality.

To strip a major academic achievement from a kid over his visibly Black hairstyle is craven, even for a majority white school board.

The formerly incarcerated have done their time, and deserve to enter a workforce that respects their value. Requiring them to identify their criminal record on job applications only makes a higher barrier to living wages, healthcare and housing.

The reasons keep changing about why it is that the Trump administration wants to keep Black and brown people out. And that's because there is no honest reason, except for racism and xenophobia. Read our full statement here:
