I mean the nerve of a documentarian seeing a journalist describe Miami this way and thinking “Yeah, let’s put this front and center three minutes in.” Whew.

It’s like every four years the rest of the country gets the teeniest, tiniest taste of the kind of racism I grew up around at the hands of empowered white Cubans in South Florida and are aghast.

In less enthusiastic news, I somehow sat through a new documentary on the 2000 recount that failed to discuss race at all? Nothing. You would think Black people did not exist in Miami. Not a mention of disenfranchisement, the purged rolls, the power dynamics. Truly incredible.

I would walk through fire to wish a happy pub day, which in this moment means "return to Twitter." Congrats on your wonder of a novel, friend.

Speaking of which, it's been an incredible month for Diane Cook's Booker Prize short-listed novel aka the last thing to momentarily drag me back to this website. Here's a Bookshop link for anyone thinking about picking it up (DO).

I need you to believe me when I tell you that 's epistolary feature on the burden of Black representation in the outdoors is your must-read of the day. Her writing is electric and unsparing. (Shoutout to for editing this piece.)

Oh, and a quick shoutout to this phenomenal piece on Whitney Houston and Robyn Crawford, which is everything I ever wanted from cultural criticism and more.

I think there is a particular relief in being able to know and name the depth of our disappointment? I don't have to tell you what seeing Susan Rice trending every other week is doing to large swaths of Africa Twitter and the diaspora here 😬
