This is why they tell you not to swim too far from the beach: you’ll get caught in the undertow and swept out to sea.

It’s one of my favorite teaching tools for intertextuality and affect. I tell the students how I was all in my feelings about the piece and they laugh at me and then I put up the images and they’re like “oh...”

And the gaps aren't just created by motherhood, but by caregiving responsibilities: as mothers, daughters, aunts, nieces, etc. Those duties truncate the time spent on the work, but also mark the work - in my opinion - with a type of emotional and affective resonance.

Morrison woke in the early hours of the morning to write before the kids got up. This is an obvious point, but so much of women's intellectual and creative work occurs in these gaps, not sitting in cafes/studies for hours at a time.

Trying to carve out the time to write the introduction for tonight's screening at the Toni Morrison festival while my kids are off of school for the week, and reflecting on how Toni Morrison talked about writing in the time outside of parenting and her 9 to 5 job...

It may not matter to the person on the receiving end, but I do think that it's a useful framework for helping us move from a place of avoiding fault to taking responsibility. I can refute a label of abuser, but a charge that I have committed harm allows room for redress.

I do lots of modifications for core exercises in fitness classes at recommendation of my physical therapist and always make sure to inform the class instructor beforehand. I worry about those that don't know that they should be doing modifications in the first place.

Fitness trainers leading activities that attract large numbers of women who have had children would learn about the specifics of postpartum bodies. A woman with a "mommy pooch" is most likely suffering from diastasis recti, which is made worse by doing crunches.

I wish that doctors checked for things like diastasis recti (abdominal separation) at the 6 week postpartum checkup, and that postpartum appointments with a physical therapist were standard in the United States (as they are in other countries).

I really wish that our society supported women in navigating their evolving bodies after delivery rather than emphasizing the "snapback." (quick thread)
