#Philosophy, #psychophysics & #neurology; together to better understand #FND. Announcing the publication of our interdisciplinary study of vision in FND. Vision👁️? That's right. New theories of #FND from 🧠#neuroscience (especially #PredictiveCoding) suggest the symptoms of these disorders can be traced to basic brain processes, and will extend to other areas. We tested this remarkable hypothesis. 2/6 pic.twitter.com/oKBOeWXT4b

We looked at 4 aspects of vision: #attention, #expectations, 👓visual sensitivity👓, & #metacognition - updating an ingenious task first designed by @maxine_sherman @anilkseth Adam Barrett + @kanair 3/6 pic.twitter.com/56fGCELqSs

Thanks to the incredible #MovementDisorder community in #Melbourne we were able to test 20 patients with #FND, 20 patients with organic movement disorders, & 20 carefully matched control participants. Without their help this wouldn't have been possible 👏 4/6

So what did we find? #attention #metacognition and #expectations were the same between #FND and control participants... But 👓visual sensitivity👓 not so much. Watch the animation below for details #scicomm 5/6 pic.twitter.com/MsdfQ6Sxz1

We take this as evidence for a difference in visual processing👁️ between people with motor disorders (#FND or otherwise) and people that are similar to them in the general population. It's early days yet... But maybe those theories from 🧠#neuroscience are onto something! 🤯 6/6 pic.twitter.com/mn6tRGchti

One final note - all of the #Matlab & #Rstats code used in this study is openly and freely available for others to use. We've also made all of the (de-identified) data for every participant available. Check my #github for details: github.com/julian-matthew… #OpenScience 7/6 pic.twitter.com/XOhU8HM84p
