👋It's domestic violence awareness month. 4 women a day are killed by their partners. That doesn't count women like Sonya Collins, who was shot by her daughter's boyfriend during a fight.

If we truly want to end mass incarceration, we need to radically rethink how we punish violent crimes, including murder

I don’t believe she deserves anyone’s grace. I just don’t think prison fixes people, it only harms. That’s all.

My response is perhaps defensive, because as I feel encouraged by the perspective of the victim’s bro in this case, I’m reading critiques that to appreciate it is to demand forgiveness from black people. I’d like it to start a convo about shorter sentences, alternatives to prison

I hear you. But as someone who believes we must stop relying on the criminal justice system to solve every problem, I found it inspiring. No one is served by her facing a long sentence.

Really glad & covering officer-involved domestic violence: I know from experience this is incredibly difficult to report on. Please read my investigation with as well:

One of the things I've learned while reporting is that it is always fruitful to follow up with subjects months and years down the line. Yet it's hard for me to remember. How do other reporters do this? Set reminders?
