If someone fed and housed you for 18 years & you bitched about it being a rip-off because you ended up out $7 along the way, you’d might be experiencing Republican governor levels of entitlement.

or... they could just make the phone slightly thicker to accommodate a higher capacity battery and make the camera flush against the back of the device like it used to be 🙄

I find the reaction to this funny. It’s an actual weird-but-relatable Trump thing.

I know Trump was not a fan of the Obamas, but replacing Michelle’s vegetable garden with a McDonald’s was really over the line.

I’m a believer many Republicans wouldn’t like the idea of tax dollars going to mosques. YMMV.

A better frame might be “stop subsidizing churches with tax dollars.” I’d love to see a budget pie that includes all the tax breaks as line items to show where we are implicitly spending, eg mortgage subsidies.

Sounds like you’re a perfect example of someone who decided to innovate in SF in this tax environment arguing people like you won’t do this exact thing. Whether or not innovators avoid the taxes in the end is a distinct question. Thy innovation still happened here.

IIRC they moved because it’s a crap margin business that’s mostly customer service and warehouse workers, so they needed to be in a cheap labor place where CA residents wouldn’t haVe to pay sales tax on their site and not Amazon.

I agree but companies think differently than startups & taxes matter more, though FWIW the entire exec team at Schwab is in downtown SF & it is career-limiting to live in another city. The main reason they grow outside SF is they get better talent in places big cos are cool.

Facebook moved from Boston to Palo Aalto though, so maybe they left money on the table. ;)

Worth noting that “moving” only works if you don’t have kids and is somewhat disruptive to work if you intend to be present but can only spend half time somewhere. You can do it (I know a NY/FL guy), but almost nobody does.

Serious question: you think the EV of their business or estates are higher, all in, as a result? I’m would but the arg it’s possible, but am skeptical of the arg it’s an obvious move.

To some extent this is true. Housing is a great example. Transportation, yes, though in odd ways (eg high cost of free parking) since we subsidize it heavily. I think it’s often cited for ideological reasons in areas where it’s not that case, such as healthcare, upper edu.

The first time I hear an entrepreneur say marginal tax rates are the reason they’re starting their business in Seattle, or a genius say it’s why they chose U. Texas over Stanford, I’ll be with you on this.

Low property taxes definitely lead to higher income taxes (et al). Though you could imagine a much lower cost of living alongside high taxes if property taxes were more like Texas without adopting their income tax policy (but decreasing them to make the change net neutral).

It’s best to think of prop 13 specifically as a transfer from the young and the inbound migrants (and companies that employ them) to the older middle class (the rich benefit much less). You could design a worse tax on innovation, but you’d have to try hard.
