Very curious to see how this develops, why OpenCon seems to try to avoid answering the questions, and what the answers turn out to be.
To very uninformed people (like me) this may give the impression that OpenCon doesn't know the answers, or is somehow embarrassed about them. twitter.com/Protohedgehog/…

This is an arbitrarily timed reminder that there is a wonderful alternative to APA and APS — one whose official journal @CollabraOA is fully open access with a fair pay-it-forward APC system :) twitter.com/annemscheel/st…

Some of us are taking a stand, join us: freeourknowledge.org. Pledge to support progressive journals, and (optionally) wait until you have a critical mass of support before you do. Scientists have all the power we need to drive change, we just need to organise effectively.

Correct. But you deciding that alone won't change anything. We all need to decide how to build the future, together: freeourknowledge.org

Maybe the UC libraries can help turn @CollabraOA (a @ucpress journal) into a no-APC journal? All it’d take is a fraction of the support paywalled journals get, and it’d make OA publishing much more appealing to authors.

It is just one of the many things going wrong in our publishing system. I just want to bring some alternatives to the table (no personal involvement to any):

Imagine a global university ranking that:
✅ Encouraged Gaming
✅ Measured by proxy
✅ Excluded 90% of HEIs
✅ Created fallacious ideas about HE
✅ Made loads of money for its creators
It exists. twitter.com/Phil_Baty/stat…

We scientists need to collectively decide what we should do about this. Do we want science to be like the Tour De France 10-20y ago, where the athletes who take the most doping will win? Or do we agree to take the medals away from the drugged-up winners?

thanks to the @Wikipedia editor who spent their wednesday night tagging the recent biographies i’ve started for #WomenInSTEM as not notable enough to be included in the encyclopaedia. it’s really constructive and helpful work. 🤬😭 pic.twitter.com/dHPOWTRdLO

1/ Yes,
The journal is dead.
"Using a journal as a mechanism for restricting access is just outrageous."
Robert was a key figure in WellcomeTrust's championing of #openaccess (e.g. southampton.ac.uk/~harnad/Hyperm… 15 yrs ago).
Robert is right. Journals now exist to stop people reading twitter.com/MuninConf/stat…
