As I was constantly being told that it was a cesspool destroying my childhood, I didn't notice at the time that '90s R&B is actually pretty strong on messages about parents tryin' to find out what you were up to.

The next song is "Fill Me In," in which all choruses are from the perspective of a suspicious parent who just came back after being away for the evening. & the song after will be "That Thing" where warned both men & women about people who don't want you for yourself

(I've got a '90s R&B mix playing on YouTube right now and "Thong Song" just came on. Even this video opens w/ Sisqo being upset his daughter finds some woman's red underwear lying around. It's like we thought you could have adult things to which kids shouldn't be exposed)

Highlights of my childhood: Mom flipping the channel when married couples smooched on family sitcoms; Dad's angry horror when stuck chaperoning 13 year olds to see and songs were about wanting to make love to your partner and dedicated "to alllll you ladies out there"

Since conservatives don't want to put in the effort to raise kids as Mom did (immigrant who did nothing to change what she saw as over-sexualized US culture, but didn't let her kids participate), apparently we can't have grown up things for grown folks w/o sexualizing 11 yo's?

And on top of all that trauma & drama, the final straw that causes Amy to run away from the dance competition is that the audience is visibly disgusted by what she's doing. She isn't getting likes. Offline, adults see 11 year olds twerking and are grossed out. Again, realistic!

Overwhelming majority of kids who post sexualized images of themselves are not actually abducted by predators. The consequences for Amy posting the photo are realistic: her friends drop her, boys assume she's fair game for groping, she gets in trouble at school, her mom hits her.

Not bad for a conservative take, but the claim that it's "dramatically unsatisfying" for the girls not to be made unsafe by their behavior, and that nothing pushes Amy toward wholesomeness, undercuts the claim of having seen the entire movie.

This might be a good metric for whether to hang onto a hard copy of a book. Is it something you'd really want your kid (or another person close to you) to read on paper? Tbh that's pushing me toward getting rid of a lot of nonfiction.

This was in response to a tweet noting that the US refused asylum to Anne Frank & her family. It might be more pressing to teach people how chronology works than to teach the specific number of genocide victims.

Also I bet a respectable Republican somewhere is at least momentarily dismayed by Witzke but is blaming her primary win on The Media. "If only you had been fair to Christine O'Donnell, the GOP base wouldn't have to push back by nominating someone even less in touch w/ reality!"

(in fairness to SNL, they were spoofing a real ad where O'Donnell literally said "I'm not a witch." I don't think Republican candidates are bothering to explain kooky past statements anymore, so the real ad wouldn't be made today anyway.)

If got "I'm not a witch" from , what's coming for the 2020 Republican Senate nominee in Delaware?

How good is KA gluten free? Must admit I wasn't impressed by Bob's Red Mill. Too much bean smell, esp after cookies had been in container for a couple days. And $14 each for the flour and for the xanthan gum I didn't realize it needed until I got home and read the back of the bag

Yeah I didn't catch it when I first read TKaM as a kid, but it struck me upon rereading as an adult, esp after being trained to volunteer w/ abused children. The recklessness of her approach to Tom (a married Black man) seemed consistent w/ a girl who'd been abused.

So if child actors depict the curiosity about their bodies and sex that's normal @ their age, the actors are being victimized? When I was 12 & visited a friend who had MTV, we'd dance to imitate what we saw. That's the most sexualized thing the actors actually do.
