Even if you oppose Trump today as much as you did in 2016, the last 2 years have probably changed you ideologically. When I campaigned and voted for HRC In 2016, I liked her centrism and proven capacity to work with Republicans, whom I still believed operated in good faith.

But learning how Obama “worked with” McConnell to conceal the national security threat posed by the Russian military invention in Trump’s favor soured me on compromise...at least when it comes to Senate leadership.

Seeing the Thorazine-deprived pinwheel eyes of Devin Nunes, Jim Jordan, Lindsey Graham, Mark Meadows, Trey Gowdy, etc etc has made me wonder what compromise with these nuts would even look like. Like Corker and Flake, I think these people are all lost to reason.

Then I saw Brett Kavanaugh, with his shrieking hymn to booze and that impossible-to-disbelieve evidence of sexual assault, passed off as a normal SCOTUS Justice...and, oh, Republicans haven’t intended to be collegial for a long, long time.

The President HRC-Sen McCain working relationship I had envisioned in 2016 was a naive fantasy. For any Dem to “work with” someone like McConnell is either be entirely had or to make democracy-endangering compromises (as Obama did in 2016).

I know hindsight is 20/20 (heh), but I think Boehner and the Tea Party’s shenanigans during the Obama Administration already made it clear who they were. That said, I’m mainly just glad more people are coming around.

Like Max Boot, I had to admit my 80s image of the GOP as hard-headed, strong-on-defense whiz kids was now (or always) a lie. Whether the GOP was hijacked or exposed in the last 2 yrs, it’s now a party of racists & kleptocrats committed to sexual assault & enabling sexual assault.

So now that compromise, debate and negotiation are off the table—subpoenas defied, votes and media suppressed, Merrick Garland & then Kavanaugh investion & justice itself obstructed—I’m consulting first principles again. I hope that’s what’s come of the last 2 years for everyone.

No “but” coming. This is my response to Never Trumpers who warn against Dems moving left. Biden is actually the mistake here. I would have supported him in 2016, when Republicans hadn’t disqualified themselves from liberal democracy . But not this time.

In 2ys we have had the Trump disgrace, torture camps, Muslim ban, Kavanaugh, Khashoggi, alienation of NATO, kleptocracy, , the nonstop evidence of sexual violence & misconduct by Trump & co, the WH-Kremlin collaboration & the complete obstruction of justice.

As in the late sixties, times have completely changed in a very short period of time. 2016 is a distant country. I know some Never Trumpers wish we could do it again w/ Cruz or some Dem just slightly less female than Hillary Clinton in the White House. Or McCain. But we can’t.

...and then we would have learned that Biden has not fundamentally changed from who he was before Obama threw him that lifeline four years sooner.

Good read. A lot of problems highlighted, sure. But what's the solution. Biden is our worst chance if you ask me.

Solutions abound in the rest of the Dem lineup, minus—in my view—Bernie and Biden. And maybe Williamson. ;)

Exactly. It’s been eye-opening. I know it’s more impressive to say we knew the extent of the violent GOP racism & misogyny (w/which some Dems incl Biden collaborated) all along but I am admitting I did not.

By the end of the 60s, the fantasies of a harmonious progressive world of JFK/RFK/MLK were dead like those men themselves. Now the Obama-era idea of a healthy center is as dead as John McC— no, sorry. But you know what I mean.

So, we should lose the election by going further left? How does that help our cause?

Nope. Just go to the new center, which is somewhere in the middle of the 20 candidates for the Democratic nomination. The “right” fell off a ledge.
