We're diligently working on an AUS version of the US energy flow Sankey diagram () that will illustrate the impact of switching to renewables.

Thank you for bringing the brilliant mind of Saul Griffith to Des Moines this morning to discuss the world’s climate crisis and what the US could be doing to transform this narrative.

In the 1970's we were capable of more bipartisan technocratic thinking. In response to the oil crisis, Nixon created the DOE, EPA, and IEA. [The data these organizations collected allowed for] the first look at energy flows in the US and understand the problem.

i.e. domestic hot water, heating, and in the future, cooling. To keep "power" over a several-day outage this would equate to about 50% less battery needed () but the addition of a lower-cost thermal storage system that would make up that 50% capacity.

Batteries are currently the most cost-conscious way to really add capacity to a home system for electrical use. For thermal, a properly designed thermal storage system could offset the load on an electrical system by covering the thermal portion of the energy used in the home,...

FYI: US cost increase is because of liability laws and the cost structures of contracting and permitting and inspection and union requirements and local building codes- "soft costs"

Installing rooftop solar could be ⅓ of the cost (as in Australia, Mexico, and Southeast Asia) but we should all do it anyway.

If you can't do hydronic, you can connect the heat pump to a heat exchanger and utilize the existing heat ducts.

Hydronic heat connected to a heat pump would require replacing your entire system but it's the most efficient electric option. It's quieter and will improve air quality and comfort. Cost is $8-$20/sqft to install based on DIY or professional install.

set it so it only charges when your solar is producing, for example.

heat pump FTW. It's a drop-in replacement. Rheem and others make them. It makes a little more noise than traditional heaters, where it’s placed is important. You can increase its efficiency with more insulation and you could figure out ways to use it to load-shift your house...

Are you talking about the grid being shut down for multiple days like the recent PG&E outages but there's still sun? or assuming there is no sun while the grid is shut down?
