14th place - my best so far. Mostly hitting the top 20 every time, so my eyes are set on the top 10!

I never thought I’d use the phrase “plan of attack” to describe Tetris.

Yes and no. The takeaway is to play more instinctively and less strategically, at least in terms of sculpting the well, because the tables turn fast and at any second your screen can be filled with garbage. Better to focus on your plan of attack.

Link's Awakening's new art style got me thinking about how the Zelda series experiments SO MUCH with its visuals compared to Mario. I looked through every Zelda game and they've used roughly THIRTEEN distinct art styles! Come walk down Zelda memory lane:

Call And Response Records wouldn’t exist, at least not in its current form, without the inspiration of Number Girl. The news they’re playing together again is really exciting.

One time my mum booked tickets to visit me in Tokyo as a surprise without checking my schedule first. Her trip was during E3, when I’d be in LA. She really regretted that idea – especially after paying the cancellation fee.

Seriously, Tetris 99 looks like Tetris, but it’s not Tetris. It’s Dark Souls meets PUBG. No tutorial, no matchmaking with friends, no easy wins. Danger at every turn. You gotta take those tips where you can find ‘em, and play like your life depends on it.

That’s true for a romantic partner, but there’s way more pressure on women to distribute treats in the office on Valentine’s Day than there is on men to reciprocate on White Day.

Would be nice to know the rules, but I’m enjoying it so far. Also the matchmaking is amazingly fast – never takes more than a few seconds to fill a game with 99 players. Must be A LOT of people playing this today.

Played a few rounds of Tetris 99. There’s no tutorial or explanation of the rules whatsoever, but it seems the more aggressively you play (targeting opponents with the right stick to send them garbage blocks), the more open you become to attacks. It’s the Dark Souls of Tetris.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Here in Japan, women are expected to give chocolates to every male colleague in their vicinity, a heartbreaking reaffirmation of male privilege & female obligation in Japan. Mind you, men reciprocate a month later on White Day, so maybe it’s fair after all?

Mr. Iwata in 2013: “If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results, employee morale will decrease, and I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress.”

It takes a special level of cruelty to announce that 2018 was your company's best year ever, personally make millions of dollars a year, and simultaneously decide to fire hundreds of people for no other reason than the millionaires who own you wanted to make a little bit more.

That said, there were also several dubious looking games as well – that Codemasters racing game looks proper last-gen, and I’m not too blown away by the Platinum reveal Astral Chain. Well, something for everyone I guess.

That was a super strong Direct – a really lovely variety of games. I can’t wait to get my hands on the Yoshi demo and Tetris 99 later today. And that Link’s Awakening remake looks utterly gorgeous.
