ok I’m going to go to a “low-key dive bar with pool tables and a convivial atmosphere” called “Ex-Wife’s Place” and then I’m gonna go to the airport hotel and work and read The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula Le Guin

being "independent" (not tied down) sounds like freedom, but you're not really free to be ambitious until you marry, because before that you're forever on the prowl to do stupid shit and chasing girls and having parties.

I think maybe one interpretation of “cancel culture isn’t real” is that cancel culture has become a weird simulacrum of itself?

(def not trying to downplay the impact power/access to powerful relationships has on this but I am curious how the collective moral verdict also affects it)

would love to hear more nuance on this but my current take on “cancel culture isn’t real” is that people who clearly have done something criminal/totally egregious stay “cancelled” for a while but people in situations with lots of ambiguity/polarized opinions tend to recover

someday someone will build a better version of goodreads and successfully convince the community to migrate over and we will all be grateful 📖

great article about Lisa Barrett, a neuroscientist who theorizes that most emotions are not biological responses but in fact constructed by our brains using our culture, expectations, and words

Minari is an A24 film about an immigrant Korean family that moves to Arkansas to farm, scored by the same guy who did The Last Black Man in San Francisco; can’t wait for the New Yorker to describe it as “luminous, quietly moving” twitter.com/stevejang/stat…

how terrifying would it be to have a horrible argument with Ari Aster and then two years later see a lightly disguised version of you on the screen getting brutally chewed up from the inside out by some slavering demon-ghoul against a beautiful eerie backdrop
