: I see overwhelming discussion on the downsides of academia. I worry what this does to the hope & inspiration of grad students with ambitions to go into academia. Given that I think is the best job ever, my thoughts on life as an academic. A thread 👇🏽

A very important comment by Sui Huang: do NOT "neglect (...) scholarly consideration of prior art and profound theoretical principles of biology."

My friend and fellow JRF at been told she can't get indefinite leave to remain, because she was on fieldwork during her PhD. Ridiculous situation, the mind boggles at why thinks this is acceptable.

Interesting to hear Siggia remark that, ethically, embryo-like structures are “like putting four wheels on a frame and saying it's a car, even though there is no engine”

Fascinating and elegant work by Fu and colleagues. The controlled exposure of human cells to defined conditions recapitulates features of the early embryo with stunning reproducibility. Lots to consider here, including wider implications

This is a really wonderful snapshot of early human development for a general audience. Not to mention the fact it’s flipping beautiful. Amazing work !!

Just over a week ago, we had a bit of an unusual mini lab reunion...!! So grateful for colleagues who feel like family, and excited to be back in the lab again after a brief break!

Not many guest dinners include a chimp call greeting, as if we were deep in the Gombe forest!🐒🙌🏻 So very honoured to have met Dame Jane Goodall, Newnham’s latest Honorary Fellow, and a continued source of inspiration for me, and for many scientists carving a new path in research

THIS is how you show the power of inclusivity and diversity in science - not arguing with those who doggedly cling to the status quo, but actively showcasing another way. Exciting to see this project develop! Great job guys!

You probably know that W. Bateson coined the word but did you know the role that women in in Cambridge, in particular Edith Saunders played in his work? Learn @ it ?
