I am curious to see signs of a lab modified virus reverting to wild type. However, as you point out, even a naturally occurring virus would tend to decline in virulence.

Could be all of the above, but if in fact the virus originated in a lab, I would anticipate a rapid drop in virulence as the virus mutates to accommodate a real-world environment or reverts to wild type.
