There’s an argument to be made about how monopoly on the wage (and access to the social wage) becomes more central to the w o w going forward, but it seems to me, at the end of our second Gilded age, we are if anything, closer to Du Bois’s original meaning.

I don’t think so, no. We wrote about it a bit here:

People often misuse “wages of whiteness.” Du Bois describes investments in racial hierarchy among non-slaveholding whites as a “public and psychological wage.” Far less than substantive material compensation, it was compensatory deference to white poverty atop black enslavement.

As the last satellite caucuses—and many first-time caucus-goers—get counted, it seems the real lesson of Iowa is not that democracy failed us but that no app or presumptuous center-lane candidate can supplant the slower, more lasting work of organizing and empowering people

And so it was with birtherism, which fused anti-blackness to idea of fraudulent or stolen birthright. In this sense, I’d less counterpoise racism and nativism than understand them within a larger, shifting racist alchemy.

Care work (for the young, the old, the ill, & the living world) is some of the hardest & most important work. That it isn't more honored down to patriarchy, capitalism, & narrow ideas of both progress & freedom. Any radical politics should aim tocenter, honor, & remake it.

If Bernie is the nominee, the racism of Trump’s campaign will exceed anything we have seen. It will feel like whiplash, since right now he faces the opposite kind smear from neoliberal progressives.

if there really isn't a way to say this politely, it's because frankly there shouldn't be: Mayor Pete is a bad person with shit values who will do evil things and call them progress

On the South Side of Des Moines, 187 people showed up to a bilingual Spanish-speaking caucus. 171 of them caucused for Bernie. Bernie got all nine delegates there — none of the other candidates were viable. Don't let this stuff get buried

Exactly—and a simplistic, undifferentiated view of racism has limited understanding of how Trump’s longstanding anti-blackness was consciously muted via his strong pivot to nativism.

There are both empirical and theoretical reasons to believe that Trump's share of the African-American vote could be significantly higher in 2020 than in 2016. The question of how to combat this threat should loom larger in the Dems' strategic debates.

"When we create the vacuum, the bad guys step in” is a pithy encapsulation of what has gone wrong in U.S. foreign policy for decades. It insults the rest of the world, flatters ourselves, and ends in endless war.
